Hydration and Electrolytes: A Key to Wellness

Staying hydrated is one of the simplest yet most impactful ways to support your overall health. Proper hydration benefits everything from your cells to your skin. Adding electrolytes to your water can supercharge hydration by ensuring your cells efficiently absorb the water you drink. Electrolytes—minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium—dissolve in water and influence the osmotic balance of your body fluids, allowing cells to draw in water more effectively.

A Few Benefits of Adding Electrolytes to Your Water

  • Replenishes fluids lost through exercise, illness, or sweating

  • Supports kidney function and fluid retention

  • Aids in muscle contraction and relaxation

  • Facilitates nerve signaling

  • Plays a vital role in countless chemical reactions in the body (many of these minerals act as essential cofactors, as discussed in my other blogs!)

  • Helps the skin retain moisture, making it look more radiant

Why Make Your Own Electrolyte Drinks?

Most store-bought electrolyte drinks and mixes are loaded with harmful ingredients. Even those marketed as organic or natural often include additives like "natural flavors," which may sound harmless but are far from truly natural. Making your own electrolyte drinks gives you complete control over the ingredients, ensuring a healthier, toxin-free option for hydration.

Enough learning already, let's get to the recipe!

Equipment Needed:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sliced organic ginger

  • ½ cup Bragg's apple cider vinegar (with the mother)

  • Juice of 4 organic lemons

  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup (grade A is best)

  • ¼ tsp Redmond's Real Salt

  • Filtered water

  • Sparkling mineral water (Mountain Valley Sparkling Water is my favorite)

  • Fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Ginger Base:

  • Slice the ginger and place it in the saucepan.

  • Cover with filtered water and bring to a boil.

  • Reduce heat and simmer for 3-5 minutes.

  • Turn off heat, cover, and steep for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Strain and Cool:

  • Strain the ginger liquid into a glass measuring cup.

  • Allow to cool (refrigerate to speed up the process).

Mix the Concentrate:

  • Add apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, maple syrup, and salt to the cooled ginger base.

  • Stir well and transfer to a mason jar or glass pitcher.

  • Fill to the top with filtered water and refrigerate.

Serve:

  • Fill a glass halfway with the concentrate.

  • Top with sparkling mineral water or regular filtered water.

  • Stir, sip, and enjoy!

Hydration Tip: Enhance your plain filtered water with a pinch of Redmond's Real Salt or Celtic Sea Salt to support cellular hydration.

Breaking Down the Ingredients

  • Ginger contains a compound called gingerol, which helps with digestion, blood sugar levels, inflammation, and contains many antioxidants

  • Apple cider vinegar (with the mother) contains many compounds and minerals that may help reduce cholesterol, control blood sugar, aide with weight loss, support cardiovascular health, and maintain a healthy microbiome

  • Lemons contain many different minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc. They also contain vitamin C and other antioxidants

  • Pure maple syrup contains many antioxidants, has a lower score on the glycemic index, and contains polyphenols which help fight inflammation.

  • Whole, unrefined salt such as Redmond's Real Salt or Celtic Sea Salt contains all of its original trace minerals and has many health benefits

Enjoy this refreshing, homemade electrolyte drink and give your body the hydration and nourishment it deserves. Every ingredient is thoughtfully chosen to provide essential nutrients, support your overall health, and keep you feeling your best. Whether you’re replenishing after a workout, recovering from an illness, or simply staying hydrated throughout the day, this drink is a simple yet powerful way to care for your body from the inside out!
